Rich, >Oh, I'm a bit of a dinosaur, too. I sneak in a FMTDTA every now and >again. Some decades ago, I wrote a little pre-processor so I could use >field names in the sort source instead of from and through positions. And since OPNQRYF added the ALWCPYDTA(*OPTIMIZE) option several releases back (was it in V2R?, I forget...), you now can have the speed advantages of FMTDTA with the ability to just name fields instead of positions. With *OPTIMIZE, the query engine will make an intelligent decision on whether or not to use access paths, and if not, perform the same sort as FMTDTA. Best of both worlds. Doug
