Something that may help you is the REUSEDLT option on the CHGPF command. Setting this value to *YES will cause deleted records to be reclaimed when records are added to the file, keeping them to a minimum. The catch, at least as of V4R1, is that a record being added that attempts to use a deleted record's space may be tagged as deleted. Apparently this happens because there is a time between when a record is identified as reusable and when it is tagged as deleted. I don't know the details, but this is what I was told. It only affects files when insertions and deletions occur with great frequency. Donald R.
