Treating a character as a logical

Can I do the following with a variable defined as 1A?  The possible values
of this variable are *blank and '1'.
If found;
...
EndIf;

Or do I have to do:
If (found=*on);

SELECT MYVAR into :found FROM ROB/TESTSQL WHERE EXISTS (
select DBNAME from qsys2/syscolumns
where dbname=?
 and TBNAME between ? and ?
 and NAME between  ? and ?)
