Every programmer should read and understand "Code Complete", it is riveting reading! I think a big problem in the RPG world is that many programmers only know RPG and this severely limits their outlook on how to do things. This is why I have come to the conclusion that is you want to hire a new RPG programmer then you will be way ahead if you just hire a good programmer who has never heard of RPG. They can learn RPG easily enough but the other languages they know can be a great help to how they approach things.
