And of course the record formats are CMREC and VMREC, right? I've used this standard for 20 years and it eliminates an incredible number of problems. I use "$" to prefix program variables and "#" to prefix display file variables. Yes, I know they're special characters...(sigh). It's this stuff-the basics-that make an enormous difference in the quality of code. Junior programmers, take note! -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-admin@midrange.com [mailto:rpg400-l-admin@midrange.com]On Behalf Of Jim Langston Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 10:12 PM To: 'rpg400-l@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Strange behavior w/%editc() Actually, I know which fields are from database files by their names. So far every application I've worked on, or written, for the AS/400 so far have had naming schemes to distinguish field variables from program variables. In one application the first 2 characters out of 6 stated what file it was from. In another program the last 2 characters stated what file it was from. In databases I've designed, I've used the first 2 chars. True, CMZIPC may mean next to nothing, but it tells me that, first it's from the Customer Master file and 2nd, it's a ZipCode. Not to be confused with VMZIPC which is the Vendor Master zip code. ZIPC or ZIPCODE would be a program variable. Perhaps you intuit it from the source? Now THAT would truly be an awesome skill.
