IIRC, if the SFLPAG = SFLSIZ, you can actually use field conditioning
indicators, e.g.

N40         ITEMS1           15A    O 6    7TEXT('Item Code')
N40         ITDSS1           30A    O 6   25TEXT('Item Desc.')
N40         FREES1            9S    O 6   60TEXT(Free Stock')

 40         ORDNS1            7A    O 6    7TEXT(Order #')
 40         CUSCS1           10A    O 6   16TEXT(Customer')
 40         OQTYS1            5S    O 6   30TEXT('Order Qty)

Otherwise, your idea of a single display file field formatted by a DS will
work.

The DSPATR(ND) will not work because the field and its accompanying
attribute byte are still on the screen even though they are not visible.
If
another field's attribute byte or data bytes happens to change the
attribute
byte of the non-display field, it will suddenly appear.
