I try not to use pointers unless it really is the best way to solve a problem.

I used pointers for one thing that I since have come up with a better
non-pointer way to do it ... good-bye pointers for that function.

But for being able to have multiple MODS occurrences available for update
simultaneously, I don't think there is a way to do it without pointers.
