Barbara, I agree, maybe a little misguided, if only for reason of consistancy. If pointers can be implicitly defined, then variable string and integer types should also - should one want to be consistant. Having to explicitly define all variables is a great feature of the language. it greatly reduces keystroke error such as these. The only reason I found it was because I was re-reading my emails and thier responses and spotted the error. at first I thought I'd miskeyed it on the email and was going to post a correction - but I had copy/pasted it from the code. Rick, it's a "feature" of the ILE RPG compiler, that you don't have to explicitly define a basing pointer. It's not an accidental feature, but it was misguided in my unofficial-not-speaking-for-IBM opinion. Barbara Morris
