Ridiculous numbers aren't the only cause of overflow--it could be better
numbers than you ever believed possible.  Sometime a design decision made
many years before can cause a process to break because conditions have
changed and a file field that worked fine for the previous ten years is now
too small.  I'd rather see a hard error.
