27 and 52 for me and the same profile: S/3 to iSeries (and I managed to
avoid the False Prophets of S/34 and S/36). I've been there, done it, and
am very glad it's behind me. He'd have a hard time defending position if
you were his peer! I think ILE RPG and CODE/400 are lifesavers; if you're
serious about writing readable, maintainable programs there's nothing better
than if-then-else logic. Indicators may be okay for him, but it will take
him longer and anybody behind him much longer.

It's nice to have flexibility with indicators and the RPG cycle; you can
pick the best technique for the job. In my shop, we have standards, but not
every program fits a standard. Anybody writing a program with an input
primary file and home-made control break logic is going to be Bill'ed1: if
you can't justify the use of a particular technique, you shouldn't (and
better not) use it.

The most important programming is done before the coding starts.

I work for a 24-yr veteran (he's 42 - WOW!) of the S/3 - iSeries systems who
thinks I'm nuts for using RPGIV - he prefers indicators and cycle processing
all the way. I never worked with anyone like this, and have no idea how to
use the cycle. Still, the rest of the attributes of the job are REALLY good,
and he doesn't make ME cycle in my coding, so I'll deal w/ it...
