How much data do you 'feed' at the time? A small test gave the following 
results:

100 writes times 10,000 bytes 0.087 CPU seconds
1,000 writes times 1,000 bytes 0.115 CPU seconds
10,000 writes times 100 bytes 0.395 CPU seconds

If you build the data to be written in a (variable length) string and writes
large "chunks" of data the IFS should perform "reasonable".
