you can test any character or numeric field for a valid date, the only
caveat is that for fields not defined as a date, time or timestamp field
you must tell the opcode what you are testing for in the opcode extender
i.e. Test(d) for dates, Test(t) for time and Test(z) for timestamps.
You also must specify the format of the date or time field in factor 1
i.e. *MDY *USA. If you also specify the 'e' extender you can also use
the %Error bif to test the result.

I thought you could only do a TEST on a field defined in the D spec as a
date field. The field that I need to check originates in the DDS. Am I
wrong on this?

Thanks
