Gary,

Like Dan, I'd like you to expand on your reasons for avoiding a single
source file. With the tools available today, I can't come up with a single
reason to use multiple source files. PDM and WDT (CODE/400) are both much
more effective tools when used with a single source file. Source files by
source type is just a "legacy" practice that was encouraged by the System/38
Programmer's Menu. I agree that things such as division of duty, security,
and backup and recovery should be considered when designing an application's
landscape, but I don't see how source type has an impact.

Regards,
Stan

Could you expand on that, Gary? Are you saying a single source file has
more risks than separate source files for RPG, CL, DDS?
I might agree if you separated physical & logical file DDS from all the rest
(RPG, CL, DSPF, PRTF) if you needed to keep a tight rein on data file
definitions source, but otherwise, I can't see what I'm missing.
FWIW: I never have two members with different source types sharing the same
name.

That's an easy opinion to have, but there are considerations beyond
those of the programmer looking for a house for his or her source.
There are administrative concerns as well. Such things as division of
duty, security, backup and recovery... These should also be considered.
And when these considerations are made, a strong argument for avoiding a
single source file is evident.
