RE: %REPLACE- WHATS WRONG

thats actually what i ended up doing when the %replace didn't work.  The
replace just came to me first when trying to do this.  

Now i want to know why it doesn't work.

I know this isn't answering your query but, why not just use:

C                       ',':' '    XLATE UMAD3        #UMAD3
