I started at the beginning, which is to say instead of focusing strictly on
how to implement subprocedures in RPG IV, I did some basic computer science
study.  (I never attended university.)  One book that I really like is "Code
Complete" by Steve McConnell, ISBN 1-55615-484-4, Microsoft Press.

For ILE concepts, the IBM manual "ILE Concepts" is quite good
