Zeroing in on the specific advantages of old-style CALLs vs. service programs:

In addition to the reasons already mentioned, the prototyped calls have the 
advantage of the compiler helping you with parm type checking and reporting 
unintended changes to parms (via CONST, VALUE, etc).
