I can think of a couple of possibilities... 1) no need to call CL, bind CL, or call a command processor such as QCmdExc 2) More importantly, ClrPFm has ramifications when journalling is in effect. The journal simply contains a single entry noting the file has been cleared. This impacts recovery. The SQL on the other hand, adds a journal entry for each deletion. This has a positive impact on auditability and recovery.
