I think Win98 does work. It would help to see the full script of what you
are entering.
I just did this on my Win98

ftp 209.12.xxx.xxx                as400 address
user xxxxxx
pass xxxxxxx
pwd                            (present working dir-display  current dir on
400 = returned "QGPL"
lcd                                (local directory-display pc current
dir-returned c:\windows
cd /bncf                        (cd on the SERVER-chg my dir on 400 to ifs
dir /bncf
lcd c:\                            (local chg dir-change dir on my win98 pc
to c:\
get bnc25.gif                (copied file from as400 /bncf dir to win98 pc
dir c:\
quit


the part to remember-lcd is "local" or client
cd is change dir on server (as400 you ftp logged onto (or NT or Unix or
whatever)
