first thx for your help. It only works with the coalesce-function.
The reason i use the sqlda, is that my sqlrpg program can
process all types of sql-statements.
in your example you fetch the result into the file-field or in a
helpfield of the same type and length.
My fetch looks like this:
c/exec sql
c+ fetch c0 for 1 rows
c+ using descriptor :sqlda
c+ into :universal_ds
c/end-exec
it's completly universal.

Not quite sure what you want to accomplish,
I use a similar construct when searching for the
highest key
c+ select coalesce(max(xyzKey), 0) into :xyzKey from xyzTable
which needs no sqlda and places the desired value directly
into the variable of the requesting program
