depending on what you're trying to do.

Used within the RPG Cycle, the control level indicators provide Header, 
Detail and Total time logic.
And, I guess it was designed to be used with the cycle.

Must say i have not written a pgm using the indicators for ages,
but I have always used them with RPG cycle.

If you go to  http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/online/v4r4eng.htm
and scan on  something like  *DETL, you may find the answer when it 
presents a schemetic on the cycle..
