What, precisely, do you have in mind as "down and dirty" APIs?

My goal in an "APIs by Example" book would be to write about API
concepts as well as much practical information such as uses for APIs,
justification for APIs, and numerous USEFUL functioning service programs
encapsulating the APIs. So, you can learn how to use them and not need
to!
