Gee, does it have to be SNA communications?

In the way back past, the company I used to work for had written interfaces 
to other systems using ICF files, and it was pretty ugly code.  Some of the 
stuff that is still in use writes to an async port, which is connected to a 
terminal server, which translates the data to IP and then forwards it 
across town to another terminal server, where it is reconverted back into 
async and shoved into another computer's serial port.

I don't know your situation, but I find it much easier to write TCP socket 
clients and servers to move data about the network.  The famous 'sorcerers 
guide' has some code examples...
