RE: DASD
Chris,

The AS/400 Handbook (V4R5) shows that the system uses an UltraSCSI
interface, and therefore tops out at a 40MB transfer rate. Do you have any
literature that claims a 160MB transfer rate on an AS/400?

With respect to PC's, 160MB/second is available to any PC, by simply
installing an Ultra 160 SCSI controller.

As far as the error reporting is concerned, you should take a look at any of
the IBM Ultrastar SCSI disks here
http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/table.htm#Ultrastar . Take a
closer look at the feature called "Predictive Failure Analysis". In fact,
take a close look at all of the spec's, comparing them to what information
is available on DASD units in the AS/400 System Handbook. You might walk
away with the same conclusion that I have -- they're the same drives.

The controllers on the DASD are more intelligent and talk to the OS to
report errors before they die completely...Does a PC DISK do that. Also
compare IBM's DASD 8.5G 10K rpm Ultra Fast Wide SCSI to the same PC DISK.
There is not that much difference. By the way, IBM's can transfer data at
160MB / second. Can the PCs do that?

The OS is software. My question is what makes the hardware of the DASD
worth so much more. I am trying to justify an upgrade to e-series AS/400.
One of the main beefs my IT manager has is the huge difference in cost. It
irks him so much that he is considering moving all the DB2 files to Oracle
in spite of the millions of lines of legacy code we have on the 400. I
need a better answer than it works better.
