If it is cost he is concerned with, then the AS400 still wins with a better overall cost of ownership than an Oracle (intel or unix) hardware server. btw-Oracle is software also, not hardware. I think some others on the list can shed light on the mtbf(mean time between failure) of the e-series disk drives, and other parts of the hardware, which has always been far better than pc hardware. I could certainly have a lower initial cost on a non-AS400 platform, but it will never be as reliable. And IT IS the OS that helps make it so. Oracle is a good database, but it requires management (and that is a cost). Does the other hardware have build in security (more cost). Does it have journalling & committment control (more cost). Is it ever down? (major cost & user irritation). I've seen Oracle version upgrades (more cost than OS400 upgrade). The cost of porting your application (more cost). The disk & memory on AS400 cost more on a line item.
