RE: RPG/400 Definition (was Using VARLEN DDS keyword)

I've been calling ILE the "run time environment" because of activation
groups and late binding (service programs) but that may not be clear enough.

I always refer to the language with the "eval" statement as RPG IV.  I think
of ILE as adding binding, either by copy or by service program.  A compiled
RPG IV program relies entirely upon itself at compile time and at run time -
there's no external module or service program that contains additional code.
In that respect, it "feels" like an OPM program, in that all the code is in
one place.

If you have a lot of external program calls i.e. CALL 'DATEPGM'
PARM...PARM...PARM then you might easily switch to an ILE service program
and CALLB and save the runtime overhead of CALL.  Prototyping those
externals will enable you to use CALLP and have a neater interface.
