You need to decide how much hacking you want to do in order to work around the fundamental flaw in the database. By "fixing" I mean that you should define your single field into its 3 components. You can make a new file that is fixed and cpyf the live data to it. This'll cause problems if you need to update (you'll have to CHAIN back to the live file) but it'll get you where you need to go. If you can't fix the file and want the absolute cheapest hack, look into FMTDTA.
