My previous employer was a wholesale paper distributor in upstate NY. Very mature industry, things never change, etc. They couldn't even handle Canadian postal codes and didn't care! Then they were sold. Twice. They're now owned by Royal Ahold in the Netherlands. Guess who needs to think about international language issues now? If a deadly boring company like a wholesale paper distributor can be thrust onto the international stage, any company can. Finally, even if you don't need to worry about such things (today) as sending an email to Hlne in Paris (two different accent marks), if you are aware of the issues, you'll be a leader in your company when you need to handle them!
