I don't know.  I think there's a bug with "cvtefnd" on our
V5R1 development machine, so I haven't run any comparisons.
(My next e-mail goes to the MI folks in Rochester!)

Since "cvtefnd" returns a long float result, it would suffer
from the same accuracy problem that "atof" has.  It also has
the extra overhead of interpreting currency symbol and
thousands separator, so I would expect it to be slower than
"atof".  If you need to handle formatted numbers, I'd go with
Barbara's "getnum" procedure.  It's both robust and can handle
numbers with greater precision than long float can represent.
