Yes, it is unreasonable to expect a working function to change
just because it doesn't work the way you expect.

We will update the Reference Manual with a little more
explanation of how %CHAR works with numeric operands.

In addition, I'll add a couple of items to our draft
enhancement survey relating to numeric editing, so perhaps we
can improve things in a future release.  You'll then have your
chance (along with everyone else) to vote on what you think
should be in the language.
