These BIFs do it for you already. Mark, you're right that %char doesn't need trimming, but %editc and %editw return a value with a constant length, including leading and trailing zeros. For example, one %editc might return 'b123' or '-123'; another might return '$123.00bb' or '$123.00CR'.
