A current excellent use of multi-member files is storing source code. I frequently use multiple member files as daily/weekly/monthly history logs. I have many clients who send batches of data outside their enterprises, and it is an excellent mechanism for storing a copy of what was sent. In the case of a corrupted or lost transmission, all the client has to do is re-send a copy of the history member, rather than having to rebuild the entire transmission - which may be an onerous task.
