The exact placement is decided at a lower level in the system. The compiler simply specifies the minimum required alignment, and in most cases, the compiler requests an alignment of 1 (that is, no special alignment). Only when pointers are involved, or when the ALIGN keyword is specified on a DS with integer or unsigned subfields, does the compiler request 2, 4, 8, or 16 byte alignment. As Ken pointed out, you can't really count on anything more. Cheers!
