I'm not sure whether it would be appropriate to you or whether they have an office in America (I'm replying from England) but we have an application called Formscape. It will pick up spooled records from any platform (including the AS400) and allow you to format those in any way that you like using standard desktop publishing tools then print on any printer that resides on your network. It eliminates the need for specialised stationary etc. We use it to print our invoices, purchase orders, reject notes etc. However, I realise that in the instance of cheques the situation will be a bit more complex. For any other printing needs it's well worth looking at. It uses Windows type icons to build up C code that is easy for the user to work with. Once the routines are written they sit on an NT Server and will continue running until you need to modify them in some way. If you're interested let me know and I'll pass on some contact details.
