Change the naming format from the default AS/400 convention to the IFS version.

In your FTP client session type one of the following incantations:

        quote namefmt 1
        site namefmt 1
        quote site namefmt 1

(which one actually works depends on your FTP client but one of them will)

Then you can transfer the file using:

put /dir1/dir2/dir3/file

NOTE: if the first command you issue from within the FTP session uses an IFS 
name, the 
AS/400 will automatically set the naming format to 1.  For example; cd /

If you want to know how I know this then type REMOTEHELP in your FTP client 
session.  
Many wonderful things will be revealed.
