Well, first a clarification. RPG IV does NOT necessarily mean ILE. The terms are not interchangeable. RPG IV DOES enable you to develop ILE apps, but there's no need to rush right into it. RPG IV is a wonderful enhancement to the RPG language. I expect you will immediately be hooked once you start using it. IBM supplies a conversion command to port your source members to RPG IV. I'd suggest converting a few simple programs and look at them to get a feel for coding D-specs and the like. Overall, the switch from III to IV comes pretty easily. ILE requires a whole slew of new concepts and approaces to application design, and is a topic best left for after you're comfortable with the new language. With that in mind, you'll find that your applications written in RPG IV can be compiled to behave EXACTLY like your OPM RPG III objects. The key here is a compiler option for DFTACTGRP. As long as you use this option, you can mix and match RPG III and RPG IV programs without compatibility problems. I'll recommend a redbood from IBM that expains the basics. It's entitled "Who Knew You Could Do That with RPG IV? A Sorcerer's Guide to System Access and More" and can be downloaded from IBM's website. hth eric.delong@pmsi-services.com ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Moving to RPG 4 Author: <RPG400-L@midrange.com> at INET_WACO Date: 9/25/00 11:44 AM Our shop is starting to move from RPG/400 to RPG/ILE. Most of us don't have any previous experience with ILE at all. Does any one have any recommendations for where to started? Any help would be greatly appreciated. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo!
