Let's not assume that simple to code solutions are always weak. It depends on the complexity of the problem and how much you're willing to spend on dealing with it. There are a lot of seemingly complex problems that have simple elegant solutions. The history of math and science is full of them. Ptolemaic astronomy is a complex solution to a complex problem. Newton simplified it quite a bit. (I know, the 3 or more body problem doesn't have a simple generic solution, but it was a lot worse before Newton.) I like the two pass solution for the kind of reports I usually write, which have page headings, column headings, columns of data, and maybe a footer. If the process that generates the report takes a long time, put the output in a file and use it to generate the report. If the data can change significantly between passes of the report, even with the output piped to a file, maybe hardware is the answer. If the truly generic solution with APIs can be written in such a way that any idiot, myself included, could apply it with minimal effort and reuse it without modification, maybe that's the way to go. > -----Original Message----- > From: Gary Guthrie [mailto:GaryGuthrie@home.com] > Sent: Thursday, September 07, 2000 8:30 AM > To: RPG400-L@midrange.com > Subject: Re: page n of x > > > Sure it's a simple-to-code solution.
