It's not in the manuals because it's a well-known (meaning published) list. You can find a copy of it at http://andrew2.andrew.cmu.edu/rfc/rfc542.html but there may be a more recent version out there someplace... The most important bits are that the codes are only general indications of what's going on (the text is the real key) and that 100-series codes are status messages, 200-series codes are indicators of success, 400-series codes are temporary problems and 500-series ones are longer term that probably should alert a human being instead of just trying again later.
