I did some teaching (mainframe RPG) in New York a bunch of years ago (RPG the 1). The student were either sleeping or dealing. I taught again in Arizona this time on System/34. Student body was mixed. Two Mensa (husband and wife) and others trying something new since the government was paying the tab. At the time I was working in a System/38 shop. All tests were open book. Isn't that what we do in the real world. No DFU's allowed (we all know what DFU stands for!!!!). Use of DFU was an automatic "F". The students had use of their workbooks, all IBM manuals available, and each other. If they asked me first, and I knew which ones did, "F". I wanted them to get used to manuals and their peers. When we came to matching records, I took one hour. Again, I wanted them to learn how to use chaining. I taught in the evening. The afternoon class got wind of my teaching methods are tried to move to the evening. I am glad to say that of that first class, 2 actually went on to become very good programmers. The others I never heard from again. Good luck with your students.
