But we figured it out. We are using RPGLE. We included an H spec with
ALWNULL(*USRCTL), as you suggest, and the %NullInd in the program.

Hello Patrick,

You need to use RPG IV (or other HLL with NULL support) and handle the null
fields by
setting the null-byte map.  You can use native I/O if you specify ALWNULL
(*USRCTL) on
the CRTBNDRPG or CRTRPGMOD commands.  Read the help text for this
parameter.  You can
also use embedded SQL.

You will find more information in the ILE RPG Programmer's Reference in
section 2.3.9.
You should also find additional information in the DB2 for AS/400 SQL
Programming
manual and the DB2 for AS/400 Database Programming manual but that means
suffering
through the poxy Info Centre interface.
