Warning: The content of this message is not 100% RPG. It's rated RL
(rpg-related) <g>

We are an RPG and Lotus Notes shop. We have 4 RPG programmers and 3 Notes
programmers. We are planning for these 7 people to take Java courses.

Our goal is to keep our legacy RPG apps since they run the business.
(That's kind of important to us.) Re-writing everything in Java would be
obsurd and not cost effective. Actually obsurdity doesn't matter so much
as the bottom line. <g> (I'm not sure how you would re-write Notes apps in
Java anyway.)

So why Java?

We are planning to put our company on the web. Java seems to be the
language of choice for the front end with our faithful loyal RPG and Notes
programs running the business in the back end.

Future apps could be written in Java accessing the AS400 data base and
giving the users a nice modern GUI. Now they can make user erros by point
and click instead of type and enter. <g>

Platform independence is important to us too. We can port applications to
platforms other than the 400 in our offices in Europe that have NT boxes.

Good employee motivator and helps to retain talented people. Positions the
company for future technology. and blah, blah, blah.

That's the promise of Java. Whether it keeps its promise remains to be
seen. I'll let you know after the course(s).

Sorry for the lengthy reply.
