Message Files

I have an outstanding problem with message files.  
I've used message file in RPG III.  However, when I converted to ILE I get a 
screen error under this scenerio:
1. do the initialize
2. Do the clear
3. Do the retrieve
4. do the write to screen
5. display (exfmt)

After this step - regardless of what I do I get an error when I read to any 
file.  

This happens in all my ILE programs  :(  
Anyone that can help?  Any one with some source I could view?
