EndreE, >well, if I remember well, the S/32 was based on the S/23 -- I did install a >few of those [ maybe 3 or 4? ] Sorry. The S/32 pre-dated the S/23 (aka the DataMaster). Even the S/34 pre-dated the S/23. The S/23 was the follow-on product to othe 51xx series line, and never ran SCP (like the S/3 and S/32) or SSP (like the S/34 and S/36). It predominately used BASIC as opposed to RPG like the S/32. The S/23 had the misfortune of being developed about the same time as the original IBM PC. According to the rumors I heard at the time, Intel couldn't supply enough 8088 chips for both projected PC and DataMaster sales, so IBM had to pick which product would use the 8088 and which would use a different chip. The rest is history. The S/23 OS and version of BASIC was very comprehensive compared to the PC (indexed files, full-screen displays with formatted input fields, etc), but it was slower than a dog. I've sometimes wondered what would have happened if IBM chose to put the 8088 in the S/23 and made the PC a performance dog instead.
