In RPG, when a piece of data is read from a file, the data is moved from the input buffer to the storage for that field. Input fields with the same name might also be coded in other input files, and those other fields might have different external formats. For example, field BAL may be defined as packed decimal in one file, zoned decimal in another, and binary decimal in another! This is all valid provided the number of digits and decimal places matches in all places. Unless a variable is explicitly defined on a D-Spec, it gets defined in packed decimal format (for compatibility with older forms of RPG). This applies to variables defined on input specs, externally described output specs, and on calc specs. Cheers!
