In client-server programming, stored procedures allow the server (AS400) to
run programs to manipulate data natively. This is usually faster than
having the client do the data manipulation using SQL statements. Also by
forcing programmers to use stored procedures set up by the data base
administrator, he (the dba) has some control over how the data is being
used.

In our shop I am using Powerbuilder to access data on the AS400. I use
stored procedures to run CL and RPG programs to speed up processing. This
allows for less traffic over the network since I'm doing reads and writes
on the 400 and not over the network with SQL statements.

I don't know if could execute a stored procedure from a command line or why
you'd want to. You can execute commands remotely in an FTP session,
though. This is probably the way to go.

HopeThisHelps!
