I believe there IS a way to define every key as an AID key.  We use a
product called laservault which uses single commands on their green
screen interface.  for example press ? and a help screen pops up.

I have never had the need to program it but I am sure it can be done. 
There is no CPU time consumed while the system is waiting for a
keystroke.
