You are correct. That person has no idea what he is talking about. We just setup
Lotus on our AS/400 and VPN. VPN is not free usually there is a per client fee.

might try the online documentation and the red books web page.

This is pure BS.  This person does not know networking.

At the very least you can run PPTP on your remote PC and a VPN server at
the home office.  This creates a VPN between you and the main network.
Done correctly this is transparent to your applications.  Is it  free -
maybe not but it is definitely possible.
