I agree with your comments and thank you for contributing a base to start
from.  I think if we had to start from scratch, it would be chaos.

I believe the measure of success of this project will be in how generic each
module can be, providing only a framework in which any number of specific
"plug-ins" can be added to suit any particular company.  There will never be
one single "product" that is the be-all, end-all ERP package.   But we might
be able to build one single framework that was flexible enough to handle the
basic functions by calling progressively more specific functions with more
and more choices to be made at each fork in the decomposition path.

This may be the impetus to finally get the common library of service
programs off the ground that has been talked about so much on this list.
It's been hard to contribute procedures to such a library when there was no
particular need to be addressed.  However, I've noticed that when someone
has a specific request, like centering a string, we get dozens of specific
examples submitted.  Perhaps this project will give us many (thousands?) of
specific needs that a particular procedure could be written for. So what if
we wind up with hundreds of different ways to handle inventory?  I'm sure
they all will offer something constructive.
