With all of the errors that I've run into trying to convert RPG II and with all of the rewriting of code pieces that I end up doing anyway, I've found that simply rewriting from the start is faster and simpler." ...and, with the benefit of accumulated years of learning, probably a much better program in every respect. I probably make the decision to re-write much more readily than most programmers I know, but it is very often a valid decision that pays dividends. Anecdote: My first project in a job a few years ago was a mod to a stock reconciliation report. I looked at the existing mess, figured out as much as I could from it, quizzed the users, and wrote a new version from scratch. (The new version, due to better output design, yielded an 80% saving in paper - just a fringe benefit.) They compared the new output to the old, and complained that mine was inaccurate.
