Your points on training are very valid and not far different from my own experiences. As a contract programmer, I'm constantly dismayed at how slow some larger shops are to adopt newer tools and technologies or make an investment in their people. I cringe when I see some of this old code but roll up my sleeves and thank heavens for CVTRPGSRC. As Buck stated, the learning curve on some of this new RPG is zip but there are some big-name software packages out there that are sticking to their 70's roots. I've always felt that the "early adopters" should be rewarded somehow for spreading the gospel but maybe the greater reward is the productivity payback they get from making the investments in training and tools in the first place. I agree with Joe that Code400 and VARPG should be part of the bundled RPG product. Maybe version 5 of RPG should include these and split out the RPG II & III compilers as separate billable options? Now THAT would be progress! -----Original Message----- From: owner-rpg400-l@midrange.com [mailto:owner-rpg400-l@midrange.com]On Behalf Of Jon.Paris@halinfo.it Sent: Friday, February 04, 2000 7:45 PM To: RPG400-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: Using % type functions/using RPG IV >>My take is that some shops recognize the value of training their staff and >>others regard it as a threat to their ability to retain staff. +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
