My customers keep source and objects separate also. Besides the backup, etc.
considerations other respondents have mentioned, there is also object
distribution.

One client manages software for several hospitals, and compiled objects
(programs, files, etc) are distributed to various machines from a
development machine, but the source is not distributed.
